CENTRE FOR COMPARATIVE LITERATURE

Centre for Comparative Literature is planning a 3-day National Seminar aiming at theorizing the marginalized groups in India, which include Dalits, Tribals, numerical and religious minorities such as Muslims, Christians, Jains, Buddhists and sexual minorities – Gay, Lesbian, Trans-sexual, Trans-gendered etc. Each group asserts its cultural and social identity so as to be distinguished from the mainstream society. In the wake of their vehement opposition to the centre, a national debate is warranted to look into their discourses that claim self-identity for their respective communities. The marginalized sections or ethnic social groups constituting the margin claim that they cannot be part of the centre and thus they tend to subvert the notion of it.

Cultural and literary discourses with regard to exclusion and inclusion of the marginalized communities would contribute to the understanding of the expanding horizons of their social, cultural and literary space
in India. The seminar intends to throw light on the identity politics of every marginalized group in respect of its socio-cultural and political sphere.

The national seminar on “Theorizing the Margins and the ‘Other” invites papers on different aspects of the marginalized groups in the country. The seminar would assure the publication of selected papers presented at the seminar. The following are the sub-titles of issues and concepts for discussion at the seminar.
